Will Working from Home Be the New Normal? 82% of Survey Respondents Seem to Think So.
TORONTO, ON — Working from home may be here to stay for many Canadian companies. Even as the province gradually reopens, major corporations like Royal Bank of Canada and TD Bank Group have already committed to keeping staff working remotely until 2021 in an effort to continue limiting the spread of COVID-19.With stay-at-home and social distancing measures having been in place for an extended period, Guhuza.com conducted a series of polls to gauge our community's thoughts on the future of remote work. Here's what we found:
49% of respondents would prefer to work from home two to three days per week
33% would choose to work from home permanently on a full-time basis
18% would prefer to return to working in the office full time
"To help flatten the curve and maintain the safety of employees, our staff are still working from home. It has been a smooth transition, and we are just as productive working remotely as we are in the office. In the future, I can definitely see the business operating both in-office and remotely," says Marc Belaiche, President of Guhuza.com.
Our Top Tips for Working from Home
1. Create a Dedicated Workspace
Whether it's a home office or a spot at the dining room table, designate a specific place for work and keep it stocked with everything you need — notebooks, pens, and any other materials. If you have children at home, set up a dedicated space to keep them engaged too, whether that's a craft station, a building block area, or another activity corner.
2. Stick to Your Usual Schedule
Try to mirror your regular workday as closely as possible. If you typically start the morning catching up on emails, followed by a 10 a.m. conference call and focused project time in the afternoon, replicate that structure at home. Consistency helps maintain productivity and makes it easier to mentally "switch off" at the end of the day.
3. Keep Communication Strong
Physical distance doesn't have to mean being out of the loop. Respond to emails promptly and make a point of keeping your manager and colleagues updated on the progress of your projects. Staying connected — even virtually — helps maintain team cohesion and ensures nothing falls through the cracks.
4. Remember to Take Breaks
It can be harder to step away when your home and your office are the same place, but regular breaks are essential for avoiding burnout. Step away from your screen at lunchtime, get outside for a few minutes of fresh air, or simply take a moment to stretch. Small pauses throughout the day go a long way toward keeping you focused and energized.
